**1985 to Present: Supporting Youth Athletics in Hampton Roads**
Since its establishment in 1985, The Norfolk Sports Club has been dedicated to fostering youth athletics and community engagement. The Club founded The Norfolk Sports Club Charities, Inc., marking a significant milestone in its commitment to supporting young athletes in Hampton Roads.
Originally named the Charitable and Education Foundation, this entity was rebranded as NSC Charities, Inc. in 1995. Its primary objective is to provide financial support to young athletes participating in programs that positively impact the Hampton Roads community. The funding for these initiatives primarily stems from the success of our annual Jamboree and generous donations from members and friends of the Norfolk Sports Club.
At our luncheon meetings, we proudly present 21 metropolitan scholastic awards annually, covering every varsity sport in Southside Hampton Roads at the high school level. These awards not only recognize outstanding senior athletes at Old Dominion and Norfolk State Universities and Virginia Wesleyan College but also form an integral part of the NSC Charities program. The achievements of these athletes are proudly displayed in our trophy case at the Norfolk Scope.
One of our flagship events, the Norfolk Sports Club Titan Wrestling Classic, has been sponsored by NSC Charities since 2016. This event has grown to become one of the premier high school wrestling meets on the East Coast, attracting 32 teams and 500 participants in its 2001 edition held at Granby High School.
In 2002, the Board of Directors approved the establishment of the NSC Junior Golf Tournament, emphasizing our commitment to nurturing young talent across various sports. We envision this tournament evolving into a regional-class event, further contributing to youth development and athletics in our community.
Our support extends beyond traditional sports, as NSC Charities is a proud sponsor of the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament, showcasing our commitment to inclusivity and diversity in sports. Furthermore, our pledge to support the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame demonstrates our dedication to preserving the legacy of sports in our region.
Through our current and future projects, NSC Charities aims to inspire both our members and the broader community to continue their volunteer service, making a positive impact on the youth of Hampton Roads.

**1944 to the 1960s: A Legacy of Sporting Excellence**
The roots of The Norfolk Sports Club trace back to the late 1930s and early 1940s when local sports enthusiasts gathered at the American Legion hall in downtown Norfolk. In 1944, spurred by the growing need for a formalized sports club, The Norfolk Sports Club was founded, marking the beginning of a legacy of sporting excellence in the region.
From its inception, the Club recognized outstanding contributions to sports with its annual Man of the Year in Sports award. Joint meetings with the Portsmouth Sports Club commenced in 1946, coinciding with the launch of the first annual Jamboree. Throughout the late 1940s, the Club sponsored various sporting events, including a notable golf tournament at the Cavalier Golf Course and the introduction of scholastic athletic awards in football, basketball, baseball, and track.
The 1950s witnessed the establishment of the Scholarship Foundation, which has since provided over $1,000,000 in scholarships to deserving student-athletes in the area. Notable contributions include the Club's sponsorship of collegiate basketball games and its support for the Olympic Foundation.
The 1960s marked the inception of several awards that continue to be presented at our annual Jamboree, reflecting our commitment to honoring excellence in sports. Additionally, initiatives such as the sponsorship of preseason pro football games and the establishment of the Norfolk Scope underscore our dedication to promoting sports at all levels in our community.

**1970s to Present: Advancing Sports and Community Engagement**
The 1970s saw the introduction of new Jamboree awards, recognizing the outstanding contributions of scholastic and college coaches. The Celebrity Golf Tournament, initiated in 1974, quickly gained prominence and was relocated to Kingsmill in Williamsburg to accommodate its growing popularity. During this period, the Scholarship Foundation thrived, benefiting from successful fundraising events like the Jamboree and Celebrity Golf Tournaments.
The 1980s marked a period of dynamic growth for The Norfolk Sports Club, with membership peaking at over 700 in 1987. The establishment of NSC Charities in 1985 further reinforced our commitment to community service and philanthropy. Notable initiatives introduced during this decade include the Scott O'Hara "Spunky" award and additional scholastic awards for female athletes.
Throughout the 1990s, the Club continued to make significant contributions to the community, sponsoring events like the NSC Titan Classic and expanding social activities. The new millennium ushered in further growth and development, with the introduction of the NSC Junior Golf Tournament and continued support for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
